The World Bank has blocked the publication of the 'Doing Business Report' on ease of doing business. This decision has been taken following several irregularities in the data of some previous reports. The opposition in India has got a chance to corner the Modi government.

What the World Bank said

"There have been several irregularities regarding changes in the data of The Doing Business Report 2018 and The Doing Business Report 2019 published in October 2017 and 2019 respectively," the World Bank said in a statement. These changes were not equilibrium with the way of doing business," he said.

What Jairam Ramesh said

Congress leader and former Union Minister Jairam Ramesh has made scathing remarks on the Modi government. In a tweet, Jairam Ramesh said, "Mr Modi was on a lot of trumpet on improving the World Bank list. The bank has now banned further publication due to irregularities in data and methodology. This government is running behind its considerable energy bogus rankings, while our MSMEs are in a constantly bad shape," he said.

India had made a leap

India's Ease of Doing Business Report jumped 14 places to 63rd position in 2020. India has jumped 79 places in the last five years (2014-2019).

On the other hand, the World Bank said in its statement that the countries that were most affected by these changes were apprised of the World Bank's Board of Executive Directors. Since we will make our assessment now, we have decided to stop publishing the Doing Business Report," he said.
